Field Note : Part of the joy of landscape photography is the opportunity for a pleasant walk. I don't tend to just let the scenery pass me by though, I use the walk as a chance to tune in to the landscape, think about how it makes me feel and how I will respond to it photographically. By the time I settle on taking a photograph, or arrive at my pre determined location, I am usually 'in the zone' and receptive to how the light and the landscape is interacting and open to it's artistic suggestions. Indeed, the walk can be very welcome for these reasons and locations that one can simply drive up to, hop out and shoot, I find yield inferior photographs to those that require me to be immersed in them for longer. The walk to this remote Abbey is quite steep but it's position is such that it's worth the effort. Making the most of the light that presents itself is half the battle and I often make notes on what potential light may fall on the subject at different times of day and seasons with a return visit in mind.
