Field Note : A burst of light, such as this, is rare and controlling the exposure so that the camera's meter isn't fooled by the sudden increase in light levels requires anticipation, setting exposure compensation in advance and swiftly bracketing as it happens. I had waited for two hours on this particular morning hoping the thick, heavy sky would permit a shaft of light. I had no idea it would be this spectacular and, all in all, I shot a sequence of about 60 images over a five minute period as the light flashed on and off as the clouds were pushed past the rising sun by a stiff breeze. Of course many of them are largely the same but I took the chance to change from landscape to portrait and kept shooting in order to record as many options for me to review later on in the calm of the digital darkroom. I chose this one because, aside from the lovely fan of light shafts, there is also a backlit wave of spray water licked of the surface of the lake by the wind which just separates it from the others in the sequence for me.
