Mount Kinabalu, Borneo

Field Note : I'd never experienced thin air until I climbed this relatively easy mountain in Borneo so it was quite a novel experience being out of breath from even a short, relatively flat, stretch of the path. After the over night stop it was up at 2am for the final ascent for a view of dawn from the summit. Whilst I enjoyed the experience I was a little disappointed with the light-it was very grey with much cloud obscuring the rising sun. Given I was using a film camera (this was 2002) I had to use 'old school' methods to inject some spice. Out came the sunset filter (a fairly lurid, graduated orange filter I shudder at the thought of using now) and my companion for the climb duly modelled for me. Fortunately, the exposure and the conditions suited this well and I achieved a natural look and with plenty of drama from all the cloud billowing around. If you ever find yourself up this mountain, my top tip is this: don't eat the English Breakfast at base camp, stick to the noodles.
