Romney Marsh, Kent
The Human Touch

Field Note : I find Romney Marsh captivating. It goes against all my instincts though; no hills, mountains or valleys. No rocky outcrops or notable colours such as a carpet of flowers. Instead it's a contradiction between a nature reserve and area of protected farmland and some of the deepest visual scars man can leave on the landscape; pylons, windfarms and a massive power station. But yet it persuades me to return time and time again to find a landscape from an area that, on the face of it, offers scant potential. This windfarm caught my attention on the drive to Rye; I figured that with some low light the white wings would stand out well against a clear blue sky and a graphic, simple photograph would emerge from the otherwise messy scene, complicated by the electricity pylons. I imagine it's one of those 'marmite' pictures; you either like it or you don't and that, for me, is as part of the whole appeal of the area and this photograph in particular.
