Field Notes

The Outer Hebrides has a number of abandoned buildings that indcate an inevitable move away from the hardships of working here towards the more viable alternaives on the mainland. There's something sad about these buildings as they slowly decay year on year and lose a little more of the signs of the lives that once occupied them; from their owners to the squatters that take over until they become even too derelict for them to use. Rather than focus on the social angle, I prefer to interpret them in the context of the natural landscape in which they sit; their dereliction becomes conected to the natural processes at work and hints instead at the social issues.
