Field Notes
The black & white photography I enjoy most is by photographers like Saldado and Ansel Adams. There is a fine use of contrast with beautiful use of highlights in eyes, rim lighting on skin or snow on mountains, clouds against a sky etc. I’m not sure what the secret is for achieving this but in my landscape work I prioritise the light even more than in my colour work where even a soft palette can work well. Here, strong side light produces epic shadows and highlights and suits my black & white tastes perfectly.
