Field Notes
Often, the light itself isn’t enough to make a compelling landscape photo. However this was a rare example for me where it seemed so extraordinarily beautiful I was happy to forgo any focal point or sense of scale. Taken from the hills near Hythe in south Kent, the elevation and distance suited a long lens to produce a tight composition of what’s actually quite a large section of sea and sky. With the rays coming in at this remarkable angle and the depth of contrast offered by the clouds and pools of light it seemed full of the essence of the light Turner used when he painted Kent.
