Field Notes
With cultivated pasture in the valley and steep, wild fells towards the top, Great Langdale is a spectacular area to explore with a camera. This tree, positioned with a dry stone wall and the fells around it is a beautiful subject to capture. With the strong backlighting it was a tricky one to expose for to ensure the shadows in the tree and the brighter sky were properly recorded as the eye could see them. In the past I might have needed multiple exposures and blending techniques but the sensor in my 5DMKIV held all the tones which sped up my post producion. I like the small burst of light; it adds a sense of 'showmanship' to the already strongly lit image and captures that experience of the light twinkiling through the branches.
