Field Notes

Here I found both the angle and pattern of ‘shadow, highlight, shadow’ repeated in the clouds and the landscape perfect at Petham, just south of Canterbury, Kent. It’s such a rarity to have both elements produce this level of visual harmony so when it arises it’s as much luck as compositional craft. Interestingly my preoccupation at the time was with using the triangular field of oilseed rape to give the illusion of a pointy hill top when in fact the horizon is pretty flat. Such are the visual games we play in our creative battle with composing nature’s elements.
