Field Notes
Swaledale is arguably the most charming of all the Dales and my visit during winter was timed to coincide with some snow fall. Indeed, without it I would have returned empty handed for the Dale was quite drab and lacklustre in the middle of a soggy December. Fortunately, snow fell and lent a pristine, white carpet to the area. The other challenge, of course is to find some light and one morning was all I had in terms of a period of light that was useable. Fortunately, I had found this location during the days before and knew where to head in the early morning gloom. An anxious wait for the sun to rise and maintain it's strength before the clouds shut it out followed. Aside from the wall being an obvious draw through the scene, the small dry stone barn perched on the distant hill provides a useful visual 'hook' for the eye to arrive at and make the photograph work. Mamiya 67II, 45mm, Fuji Velvia, exposure details not recorded.
